Gary Lewis
Gary Lewis, nome d’arte di di Gary Stevenson è nato a Glasgow il 30 novembre 1957.
È nato e cresciuto a Easterhouse, sobborgo di Glasgow. Dopo aver lasciato la scuola, trovò un lavoro come spazzino per guadagnarsi da vivere. Più tardi, Lewis trovò lavoro nella biblioteca locale.
Incoraggiato da suo fratello, un insegnante di inglese in una scuola secondaria di Glasgow (Stonelaw High School), iniziò a leggere voracemente e a pensare di perseguire una carriera come attore.
Lewis aveva 32 anni quando ha iniziato ad impegnarsi seriamente nella recitazione, unendosi al Raindog Theatre di Robert Carlyle. La sua carriera ha ricevuto una svolta quando è stato aiutato dall’attore e regista Peter Mullan che ha incontrato in una conferenza socialista. Mullan lo assunse per un ruolo nel corto “Close”, che ha iniziato a girare nel 1991 ma che richiese 3 anni per essere completato. Al tempo, entrambi gli attori erano apparsi in “Shallow Grave” (1994). Lewis ha recitato anche nel successivo corto di Mullan “Good Day for the Bad Guys (1995) e nel premiato “Fridge” (1996).
Nel 1997 riceve il Premio come miglior attore al Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Gijón per la sua interpretazione nel film “Orphans”.
Nel 2000 compare nel film “Billy Elliot” nei panni di Jackie Elliot, il padre del protagonista, aggiudicandosi il Premio come miglior attore al Flaiano Film Festival.
Nel 2002 recita nel film “Gang of New York” diretto da Martin Scorsese interpretando il ruolo di McGloin.
Nel 2006 viene scelto per interpretare il personaggio di Roothgar nel film fantastico “Eragon”, diretto da Stefen Fangmeier.
Il 4 Settembre 2013 ha firmato ufficialmente il contratto che lo lega alla Starz per interpretare il personaggio maschile di Colum Mackenzie nella serie tv “Outlander”, creata da Ronald D. Moore e basata sull’omonima saga letteraria di Diana Gabaldon.
